I'm so glad I took up a recommendation from a friend, who is a Chicago local, to dine at Uncle Mike's! I ate there on a Saturday morning, arriving around 11am and had to check in on the wait list. Fortunately, the restaurant had recommendations for waiting diners, including Publican Quality Bread (James Beard winner). After snagging coffee and some pastries, my partner and I were notified of an available table! The establishment had diners at every table but still had a cozy, home feel--much like going to a full Filipino house party. The service was great and the food was just what we were hoping for in terms of flavor. I had the combination plate with spam and bangus; my partner also had a combination plate with longanisa and tocino. The lugaw opener was just what we needed to settle in from the cold and a perfect way to get our bellies ready for the savory main dishes.

I've heard about this restaurant over the yrs but I had never dined here before. The service was very nice and everyone greeted me. Today I had the skirt steak and fish for breakfast. The steak was cooked to perfection. My eggs were on point and I really enjoyed my fried rice. This was my first time trying a fillipino breakfast but for those who ate less adventurous they have American food too. I'll be back again soon

Finally got the chance to dine-in at Uncle Mike's Place, a very popular Filipino breakfast restaurant in the Ukrainian Village/West Town neighborhood of Chicago. For our party of nine eating in on a Monday morning, the food and service was excellent...never hurried and the food was served piping hot and in big portions. A definite winner. Uncle Mike's was started in 1991 as a typical neighborhood breakfast diner, serving american breakfast and burgers for the neighborhood. They started to serve Filipino dishes in 2008, starting with a really good rendition of the co-owner's mom's lugaw...and it jumped from there. I was able to sample a lot of their dishes, and many of them I found to be the best version I've eaten at a Filipino restaurant. Everyone gets a cup of their famous rice porridge to start. It's very good: so soothing on a cold Chicago day. It has the typical garlic and scallion toppings, but also had a fresh lemon slice. It was the first time I've had lemon on rice porridge... and it really works as a flavor enhancer. The menu is available via a QR code on your phone and isn't too big: one side of Filipino classics and one side of American. Our party ended up getting a mix. Big Bangus ($20.50) - It's a whole large milkfish, deboned, marinated in a vinegar base sauce, and then deep fried. It comes with a choice of egg, garlic fried rice, a very vinegary pico de gallo (great with the fried fish), and some sawsawan dipping sauce. This dish all starts with a very big piece of fish, butterflied. I've had many versions of this dish, and this was probably the best, mainly because of how large the fish was, giving up big pieces of boneless loin that I could dip in the sawsawan. It also came with chocolate rice pudding (champorado), which was the first time I tried it. It's good in moderation. I also got to sample a piece from their skirt steak dish (full for $27.50). It was served well done on request, but was still tender. My wife tried their french toast ($9.75) from the American menu, which I thought was OK. The tocino plate was plentiful, but I'm not a fan of such a sweet marinade (which is why I didn't try their longanisa). I also really wanted to try their potato pancakes, but was told that they only came in fours and nobody else at the table wanted to try it. Definitely, next time.

A bit of a heavy breakfast but tasty and satisfying. When you're seated, they bring you a complimentary bowl of delicious chicken & rice stew(lugaw). I was disappointed to find out they only serve coffee but have no other beverages like latte or cappuccino. My little cup of coffee cost $4.50! I ordered a combo with the 4oz skirt steak and longanisa, which comes with two eggs on top of garlic rice. It also came with a little salad/salsa and something like chocolate rice(champurado). The eggs and steak were not salted to my preference but that's okay. They have sriracha sauce! The longanisa was tasty and crunchy. It feels strange for me to eat rice for breakfast, especially after I'd already had the stew, so I did finish everything except the garlic rice and chocolate rice. Overall very good!

A breakfast place that specializes in Filipino and American breakfast. We came here on a Sunday around 1P and waited about 30 min. You're technically not supposed to wait inside so we ended up visiting a coffee shop and bakery across the street. They seemed slammed so they missed my drink order and another server tried to take our order. It might've been because we came late but they ran out of the complimentary congee. Due to the egg shortage, it was 1 egg instead of the usual 2. My only gripe was I wish we had more rice. The meat was hearty so I would've wanted a bit more rice so the dish was more proportional. Overall it's a solid spot for bfast

So simple but so delicious! I always get the same thing when I come which is the combo platter with steak and toccino. The flank steak is cooked to perfection and toccino has so much flavor and super tender. Love the sweetness of the pork shoulder and I've heard the longanisa is good as well. They start you off with complimentary lugaw which is always delicious. It gets pretty busy starting at like 10 am on the weekends but usually the wait isn't too long, around 20-40 mins depending on the weekend. As far as I know they don't take reservations so you have to go out your name down.

Maybe our group of five just got lucky--we found street parking nearby and were seated right away. The service was decent, nothing special, but the food came out quickly. The tocino was absolutely amazing and the highlight of the meal! On the other hand, the feta omelet was a disappointment. It was way too runny in the middle, to the point where I could only eat the cooked parts and passed the rest to my boyfriend, who wasn't as picky. Next time, I'm sticking with the tocino--it's a clear winner!

I have been wanting to try this place for awhile now. Finally! I was a bit disappointed that the menu is americanized with having pancakes and omelets because i thought this would be like one of those legit "all filipino breakfast" place. Other than that the food was good. I did like the tocino and the lugaw. I wish they didnt put cinnamon in their champorado because its not the filipino way. Dont get me wrong it does taste good but not authentic. I didnt like the baby bangus, i kinda prefer the belly but thats just me. The place is a bit small but comfy no complains. Service was great! Parking is a bit of a challenge since it was street parking. Happy eating!!!
